HighBrow Vapor lives up to their name by packing their-liquid in butcher’s paper and twine. It feels like you are receiving a high-end package from a prestigious company every time you open a box of their product.
Read our review to find out if that is just a cover for subpar flavors or if they really are highbrow in more than just name.
A lot of these e-liquid companies survive on offering compelling choices. Perhaps they offer a huge selection or maybe they just offer a few flavors but they do those really well and they make sure they are flavors not really represented elsewhere. HighBrow offers close to 50 flavors. Not all of them are terribly unique or even that different from each other, but there is enough choice here to please most people.
The company’s liquids only come in two sizes- 10ml and 30 ml. You either get a sample size or a big investment. In most cases this is fine, but you will burn through the 10 ml pretty fast. It would be nice if there was a mid-sized option, but it’s certainly not a deal breaker.
The standard or suggested mix is 80/20, favoring propylene glycol over vegetable glycerin. We favor PG over VG as well, but we still like that HighBrow lets us choose our mix. You can mix up the amounts of each base however you like, and we recommend something between 60/40 and 80/20, always favoring the PG.
They offer a variety of flavors, hitting each of the three main flavor categories in turn- desserts, tobacco and fruits. We tried a few of them, and we have detailed our experiences for your edification.
Highbrowbacco RY4- This is kind of the company’s flagship flavor, but it doesn’t have flagship taste. Maybe we just got a bad batch, because you would think they would put the most care into this flavor over the more generic stuff. But it left us with the taste of acetone. Hiding behind that acetone is a nice tobacco flavor, but as it stands, this is not a pleasant liquid.
English Malt Toffee- Now this is one we can get behind. It offers a wonderful concoction of flavors- sweet, salty and just a hint of each of the flavors. We have not had anything quite like this before, and we suggest everyone give this a try at least once.
Vanilla Bourbon Bean- This one was a bit flat for our tastes. Even after letting it steep for a while, it felt very plain and boring. There are better vanilla flavors out there.
Strawberry Lemonade- We loved this fruity flavor. It’s the perfect combination of two light flavors that offer a pleasing hit.
Is It Worth Your Money?
The two choices of e-liquid sizes will cost $7.50 for the small and $15 for the large. This means the small is more expensive than market average while he large is a bit lower. If you know what kind of flavor you will be happy with, it is definitely worth it to spring for the larger one. Of course, you don’t want to spend that much on a single bottle if you aren’t sure what you are going to get.
One big problem we had with HighBrow’s liquids was that they were never steeped by the time we go them. When you have distinct flavors like this that are a combination of a few ingredients, they need time to mix or marry together. And while some manufacturers will steep the flavors beforehand, Highbrow never bothered. That means if you want to have one of these right out of the box, you are going to be disappointed by the flat flavor.
You can steep them yourself by opening the bottle and letting it sit out in a cool, dry place. Or you can pour the contents into your tank and let it sit overnight. It can take anywhere from 8-24 hours after you receive the liquids for them to steep properly.
This is something that a few e-liquid manufacturers struggle with, and we wish it wasn’t so prevalent with Highbrow’s selection.
- A varied selection means there are plenty of great choices available
- Mostly quality liquids that offer satisfying hits
- Price point is nice if you are buying large containers
- Some of the flavors are not very appealing
- None of the e-liquids seem to have been steeped beforehand, meaning we had to wait to enjoy them
- Odd pricing structure greatly favors the larger bottles
