The beautiful design of Juul is surely its major strength and biggest selling point. The manufacturer – once named Ploom – was previously known for their two vaporizers: Pax and Pax 2. Both of these had great design. But it was after they sold the Ploom brand name to the Japanese tobacco conglomerate JTI and launched the stunningly elegant Juul, many started calling them Apple of vaping.
The pocketable design feels solid and is pretty small, has squared edges and a tiny magnetic USB charging dock. In fact, it looks pretty much like a puffable memory stick. The design, despite all its elegance, has a little downside: if you're quitting, you won't get the same sensation when holding Juul as when holding a real cigarette. Nothing deal breaker, but you might take a while to get accustomed to it.
If a vaping product has a steep learning curve, most people – especially the beginners – will simply hate it. Fortunately, this isn't the case with Juul, and you don't even need to read the manual as at all it takes to start vaping is a little common sense. Juul comes with a USB charger, a pack of four different flavored cartridges of JUULpod (each 0.7 ml with 5% nicotine) and one year warranty. Just unbox the e-cig, load any of the cartridges, and start puffing – it won't take more than 20 seconds. Since the JUULpod doubles as a mouthpiece, and there are simply no buttons or complicated battery installation, this surely is one of the most user-friendly e-cigs available on the market.
After unboxing Juul, and being blown away by its beautiful design, we were mentally prepared for disappointment, since most manufacturers either focus on design or performance. So, we thought that Juul has a great design, it's performance will be unimpressive or, at best, above average. Honestly, after having flirted with all sorts of box and mech mods, and the latest sub-ohm tanks, we were not too excited. However, we realized that we had yet another pleasant surprise waiting for us when we used the gadget for a few minutes.
For such a small size, Juul delivered an amazing amount of vapor, that was full of flavor. In fact, it nearly gave the same hit to my throat like a Marlboro Red 100, and this is why we believe Juul could come in handy for people who want to quit smoking with vaping.
JUULpod comes in four amazing, though weirdly spelled flavors: Miint, Fruut, Bruule, and Tabaac. Each of these contains 0.7 ml of e-juice with 5% nicotine by weight. And we believe that their real secret lies in their ejuices that offers great flavor, or maybe their nicotine is just too good. Also, it's amazing how the temperature of the coil is controlled to give you largest possible clouds but keeping away dangerous chemicals – such as formaldehyde – that are produced when the coil or juice gets overheated.
The manufacturer claims that one cartridge offers the same number of puffs as a pack of cigarettes, and according to our calculation, their claim is pretty accurate. Considering that in some states a regular pack of cigarettes can cost as much as $9.70, Juul with its four cartridges seems extremely affordable.
What we loved about Juul
- Extremely elegant design
- Powerful hits
- Four free cartridges of amazing flavors
- Affordable price
- Very easy to use, no refilling, no cleaning, no buttons
What we didn't like much
There is hardly anything not to like about Juul, the only thing as we mentioned earlier is that it doesn't give the same sensation to your fingers as a traditional cigarette, and if you are trying to quit smoking with vaping, this might be a change of pace at first. We also heard a couple of complaints that juice starts leaking from the cartridge, however, we have been vaping Juul like crazy for several days now, but no complaints. Maybe there were a couple of bad pieces, or the users dropped them onto the ground and some breakage caused the leakage.
From price to design to performance, we give Juul two thumbs up for everything. It offers an equally amazing experience for both the beginners as well as old cloud chasers. The e-cigarette is so amazing that it has been praised by the likes of WIRIED ("This might be the first great e-cig"), MEN'S FITNESS ("Juul: The iPhone of E-Cigs"), and TechCrunch. So, in case you want to switch to vaping but don't like the ugly design of e-cigs or don't get similar hits, Juul will not disappoint you.
